Kistler Book Award HOME \| NOMINATION PROCESS \| RECIPIENTS 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 The Walter P. Kistler Book Award was established to recognize authors of science-based books that significantly increase the knowledge and understanding of the public regarding subjects that will shape the future of our species. The award is bestowed annually. Named for the originator of the award program and benefactor of the Foundation For the Future, the Walter P. Kistler Book Award includes a cash prize of US$10,000 and a certificate. It is formally presented in ceremonies that are open to the public and that include a lecture by the author, Q&A, and book-signing. 2008 Recipient Christopher B. Stringer, Ph.D., FRS Research Leader in Human Origins, Natural History Museum, London Director, Ancient Human Occupation of Britain (AHOB) Project Author of Homo britannicus: The Incredible Story of Human Life in Britain. Past Recipients 2007 – Eric J. Chaisson, Ph.D. Director, Wright Center for Innovative Science Education Research Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Tufts University Associate, Harvard College Observatory Author of *Epic of Evolution: Seven Ages of the Cosmos. 2006 – William H. Calvin, Ph.D.* Affiliate Professor Emeritus Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences University of Washington School of Medicine Author of *A Brain for All Seasons: Human Evolution & Abrupt Climate Change, which addresses the broad sweep of hominid history and the likely impacts to it of abrupt climate change. 2005 – Steven Pinker, Ph.D.* Cognitive Scientist Johnstone Professor of Psychology Harvard University Author of *The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature, which addresses the fears associated with acknowledging a universal, biologically based human nature. 2004 – Spencer Wells, Ph.D.* Geneticist, Writer, and Filmmaker National Geographic Society Fellow Author of *The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey, which explains the science that enabled Dr. Wells to trace the genealogy of humankind of focusing on genetic markers on the Y-chromosome. 2003* – Gregory Stock, Ph.D. Director of the Program on Medicine, Technology, and Society School of Public Health University of California, Los Angeles Author of *Redesigning Humans: Our Inevitable Genetic Future*, about technologies that will enable parents to make choices about their children's appearance, capabilities, and health risks.
